My favorite OS apart for OSX is Ubuntu and I thought I would like to have the lastest PHP for my test server, so it’s upgrade time. First make a backup, just in case though I’ve never had a problem ever but you never know. OK so now you have backed up your server it’s time to do the upgrade.

Make sure the server is up to date so change to root:

Now upgrade your system:

Once you have done this then install update-manager-core

Now we can upgrade the server:

All you have to do now is follow the on screen instructions. There will be a point when some configurations files will be updated if you have altered these then say no to over writing these. When the update is done there is one apache change you will need to do, in your virualhost directive you may have:

You will need to change this to

And the NameVirtualHost is no longer needed so you can comment it out now.
For all other apache changes see http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.4/upgrading.html

OK that should be it and you should have Ubuntu 14.04 running nicely with PHP 5.5, Apache 2.4 and MySQL 5.5.

Enjoy!
